6-Month Internship – AI for Image Enhancement of Wind Turbine Blades

Founded in 2016 by Tom Sulzer and Christof Schmid, Zurich-based Sulzer Schmid is at the forefront of innovation in the energy service sector. Recognizing the potential for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology to redefine industrial grade inspections, the two entrepreneurs have developed an end-to-end technology platform that produces high-quality rotor blade inspection results with ease – precisely, repeatably, efficiently. To date, we have inspected wind turbines in more than 40 countries worldwide using our 3DX™ technology and each inspection is underpinned by our commitment to the highest quality, efficiency, safety and groundbreaking use of technology.

Since September 2024, Sulzer Schmid is part of RES, the world's leading renewable energy company. This allows us to leverage the vast expertise within RES to create an even more powerful 3DX™ Blade Platform designed to meet the needs of OEMs, owners and operators alike. By integrating our innovative 3DX™ technology, RES expand its extensive O&M capabilities to include autonomous blade inspections and advanced data analytics, meeting customer demands for smart, digital and data driven O&M.

At Sulzer & Schmid, we value and embrace diversity, recognizing it as a key driver of our success and a cornerstone of an inclusive workplace. We actively welcome applicants with a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, and we are committed to building diverse teams that are equipped to solve complex challenges and deliver impactful solutions to our clients. Our inclusive culture is shaped by a broad spectrum of attributes, including — but not limited to — ethnicity, culture, gender, nationality, age, sexual orientation, disability, marital and parental status, education, socioeconomic background, and life experience.

Your Mission

As an intern, your main task will be to optimize existing images of wind turbine blades. The biggest challenge is dealing with uneven lighting conditions — bright and dark sides of the blades caused by sunlight — which complicate damage analysis. Using AI techniques, you will work on improving image exposure and consistency to enable our blade experts to detect defects more reliably. Additionally, a secondary task will involve removing drone rotor blades from images to avoid interference with the analysis.

Technology Stack

You will work with cutting-edge AI tools on Microsoft Azure, primarily using Python, automated pipelines, and related cloud services.

What We Expect

Currently enrolled in a Master’s program in Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Vision, or a related field

Strong programming skills in Python

Interest or experience in image processing and AI-based image enhancement

Willingness to work with Microsoft Azure cloud services

Proactive, solution-oriented mindset and ability to work collaboratively

What You Will Gain

Hands-on experience in applying AI to real-world industrial challenges

Deep insight to cloud-native AI development on Azure

Opportunity to contribute directly to the advancement of renewable energy technology

Flexible work arrangement with up to 60% remote work
